get dog training help with professional dog training

Why should a pet owner consider professional dog training for his pooch? There are plenty of reasons. Dog training lessons can turn a willful, disobedient canine into a balanced one that heeds your commands. When this happens, the dog is actually much happier, and of course, the owner is, too. Dog training ranges from basic obedience to more specific instruction. You can find dog training schools and individual trainers that specialize in agility, guarding, herding, and personal protection. A host of behavior problems can also be reversed with professional dog training, including animal aggression, people aggression, food aggression, destructive chewing, running away, and jumping up on people. If you’ve had problems potty training your pup, there are dog training lessons that focus on that.

Basic obedience dog training

Basic obedience training is just that – basic. It should be the foundation of any further professional dog training, or it can stand alone as a way to make your pet more manageable. Just about any age canine can benefit from this type of professional dog training.

With obedience dog training lessons, the main objective is to teach your pooch to be responsive and compliant to your commands. These might include sit, stay, and down. You probably want your dog to learn to walk on a leash properly and obey the “heel” command, also.

With obedience dog training, both the owner and the dog are trained. In other words, you’ll learn to control your pet and get it to respond appropriately to your commands. Canines are social animals that have learned over the eons to be part of a strict social hierarchy. Obedience dog training lessons will teach you how to tap into this instinct and take advantage of it.

Personal protection dog training

With personal protection dog training lessons, your canine is taught to recognize threatening situations and to protect you and your family against intruders, attackers, and others who mean you harm. Not all dogs can or should be trained as protection dogs. For example, while small and toy breeds can be great alarm dogs, most intruders wouldn’t be too concerned about a five-pound assailant. You’d be wasting your money to get this kind of professional dog training for a toy poodle.

Even if you have a larger breed, it might not qualify for guard dog training. With most dog training schools, a one-on-one consultation is required before guard dog training lessons can be approved. You and your dog will be assessed, and you’ll have to prove that you have total control of your dog at all times. Most dogs need to go through intensive obedience classes before they can be considered for guard dog training.

Owning a guard dog can be a great deterrent against several types of crime, which is an asset. Owning such a dog can also be a liability, however. In some areas, certain guard dog breeds must be covered by liability insurance. Also, dog training lessons for protection dogs isn’t cheap. The price varies among different dog training schools. Depending on the school and the exact type of dog training you receive, it could run into the thousands.

Assistance dogs and service dog training

If you have certain types of physical disabilities, you can get professional dog training that will teach your pet to be your personal aide. Most people know about guide dogs for the blind, but dogs can be trained to do many other tasks, also. For example, a deaf person might want a dog to alert them when the phone rings or when a visitor knocks on the door. For someone who’s immobile, a dog can be trained to fetch certain items. Some individuals use a large dog like a Great Dane or Mastiff as a brace or as an assistant in rising from a chair.

Professional dog training for hunting dogs

If you enjoy bird hunting and have a pointer, setter, springer, or retriever, you can benefit from professional dog training. Some breeds are natural pointers or setters that locate and “point to” ground birds like quail. They might also retrieve downed birds. Springing breeds flush game birds like pheasant. Retrievers are taught to correctly fetch and return game like doves, ducks, and geese without harming the meat.

I used to do basic training for quail dogs. I taught them basic obedience commands and worked with trailing, pointing, and retrieving. I offered dog training for English pointers, English setters, and Brittany spaniels.

Puppy training

Getting dog training help while your canine is still a puppy is a great way to start your pup off on the right foot…or paw. It can nip potential future problems in the metaphorical bud, so to speak. Most dog training schools offer puppy classes.

As with obedience dog training, dog training lessons for puppies teach the owner as well as the animal. In fact, most of the learning is probably done by the human. Owners will learn about the importance of socialization and how to properly socialize their pup, canine health, exercise, and proper feeding and nutrition. The human will also learn how to train the puppy, with an emphasis on preventing bad behavior.

Group dog training schools or private dog training?

With many dog training schools, owners will have a choice of group lessons or private dog training. Group dog training lessons are usually held at the dog training schools and usually involve basic obedience classes. Private dog training might take place at the dog training school’s facility or in your own home.

Obviously, group classes are less expensive. Private dog training, however, is generally more intense and both the owner and the dog get the benefit of all the trainer’s attention. You’ll have to decide which type of dog training is best for you and your pet.

Private dog training is appropriate for guard dogs and protection dogs.

How to find the best dog training schools

If you’re looking for the best dog training schools, talk to your friends, family, co-workers, and business associates. If they’ve used dog training schools, they’ll be able to provide you with their experiences. Also, your veterinarian will most likely be able to make a recommendation. If all this proves unproductive, do an online search for dog training schools and professional dog training in your area.

Excellent hub. It's amazing how often people just let their dogs run the house. I love the pictures you included too. :)

I like what you said about the professional trainer training the human as well as the dog. I'll turn that around just a bit: humans will learn as much from a professional trainer as dogs will, not only about the dogs but about themselves. They say that dogs and their owners have a tendency to look alike; I believe they also have a tendency to feed each other's behaviors. Where there's a problem dog, there's a human in need of education and self-examination. I'd almost go so far as to say that a good professional trainer sets the stage for a therapeutic opportunity.

Great, well-detailed hub with a lot of valuable information.

I love dogs--they just no longer fit our senior-citizen "lifestyle," given we've developed some physical limitations. This is because dogs are much more "high maintenance" than cats.

I did have dogs when my kids were young...and I did learn how to train them. I often see folks out walking their dogs.....errrrrrr....dogs walking their humans, who could certainly benefit from some basic training!

Voted up & useful.

You know you have my vote on dog training! Especially with 'difficult' breeds, it's a must. Speaking of which....chapter 2 in the Kirchner malamute book coming soon to a home near us!

Excellent hub! I love the pictures that you post here. Thanks for all the informative information! Obedience training is so important for both the dog and the owner too. And the obedience training should start from young, for them to easy get use to it. And should add some fun on to the obedience training too.
