Every little girl needs a tea set. When she’s a toddler, she should start out with a plastic or acrylic tea set. When she gets beyond the putting-small-things-in-her-mouth stage, she could move up to a tin or wooden tea set. Then, once she gets old enough to really appreciate breakable items and learns to take care of her possessions, she needs a pretty porcelain tea set or china tea set. That’s my take on it, but maybe it’s just a “Southern thing.”

When I was a kid, all little girls had a tea set. Like I said, maybe it’s just a Southern tradition. We’d dress up in play clothes or in our mothers’ high heels, fancy hats, and boas and have tea parties with our friends. If friends weren’t available when we were in the mood for tea, we’d sit our stuffed animals around the little table and enjoy our tea with them. Sometimes our “tea” was Koolaid, and sometimes it was iced tea – the house wine of the South. We would also enjoy cookies or tiny sandwiches from our dainty, delicate porcelain plates. We used our very best manners while at our tea parties. Once in a while we could even cajole our guy pals or older brothers to join us for tea by luring them with homemade cookies!

I still have one of my porcelain tea sets from my childhood. It’s in the Blue Willow pattern and it’s displayed proudly in my dining room. I’ve carried on the tea set tradition, too. When my three daughters were children, they all had tea sets. In the last couple of years, I’ve also given plastic tea sets to my granddaughters as Christmas gifts. This year, I think I’ll give my oldest granddaughter, who’s six, a porcelain tea set as a Christmas gift. She’s old enough now not to break it.

If you’re trying to decide on birthday gifts or Christmas gifts for little girls, or for not-so-little girls, a porcelain tea set would be an excellent choice. They can be played with, displayed on a shelf or in a curio cabinet, and handed down for generations. Start your own family tradition this year!

Below are several lovely porcelain tea sets and china tea sets offered for sale online. Most are at a discounted price, and they’ll be delivered right to your door! If you’re looking for a tea set for a toddler girl, click the link found below the tea sets for sale.

I'm older than you, but we did have tea sets in New England, too. And like you, I loved mine and took care of it and had tea parties under the tree on the front lawn. And like the others before me, thanks for the memories!

My sis and I had one too that we bought at the import store - it wasn't fancy but it did the trick....the one above is gorgeous! Great info.

Habee, I love tea sets and have one antique set that I got from my mom that I keep on my china cabinet. I had a little porcelain one as a child that I kept for years, but we moved so much that it got broken which was really sad. Thanks for a nice hub.

My daughter is still a toddler so I'll wait a little while before I get her a porcelain set. The one at the top was so cute.

It sounds like a wonderful tradition. I recall seeing little girls playing with tea sets from old movies, paintings, and so forth. I loved playing dress up so I'm sure I would have loved having a tea set as well.

Yes, Nancy, the girls need to be old enough to be careful with it!

Mulberry, it was a big tradition around here!
