A good friend of ours built a tiki bar next to his pool a few years ago. It’s on a raised platform, and it’s in the shape of a square, with tiki bar stools all the way around. The center has room for a “bartender” or two, along with foods, drinks, and supplies. There’s also a ceiling fan in the center that provides welcome breezes in the stifling heat of summer.

Don has always been sort of famous for his great parties – even more so since the construction of his tiki bar. Everyone wants to hang out at the tiki hut! I guess it makes us feel like we’re on vacation at some tropical locale.

The tiki bar is adorned with some great decorations: carved tiki masks, tiki totem poles, and fluorescent tiki bar signs. It’s a nice combination of serious artwork and whimsical items. I asked Don where he found all his décor, and he told me he had searched high and low for most of it. He actually had to make a trip or two to Florida to retrieve some of the articles.

Now I want a tiki bar! We have a large deck in the back yard, around the pool. The deck has two levels. I’ve found the perfect spot for my tiki hut – against the house, just outside the sliding breakfast room window. We can build a bar along the outside wall, add a few bar stools, and cover the whole area with a thatched roof. Of course, we’ll have to add some tiki hut or tiki bar décor, and that’s my department! Hubby gets to have all the fun with construction, and I have to do all the hard work of locating and choosing tiki bar decorations. Alas, such is the fate of woman…

My problem isn’t finding the decorations for the tiki bar – I’ve already located several things I want, at discounts prices. My problem is choosing among the great selection! I can’t have everything!
