Dog Attack Attorney for Dog Bites

It happens all too often. Man’s best friend goes momentarily berserk and there's a dog attack on a human. With aggressive dogs, the dog attack can be particularly devastating. It might continue to bite long after the victim has been subdued. A vicious dog can cause major damage, and in some cases, a dog attack can result in death - especially for a child.

Non agressive dogs might stop biting once the victim is deemed properly subdued by the canine, but there's still a nasty dogbite to contend with. In many dog bite cases, the offending animal has not been labeled a vicious dog, so the dog attack could seem to come completely out of the blue.

Why does a dog attack?

While dogs are occasionally known to attack their owners, they’re more likely to attack someone else. Even trusted family pets can sometimes be provoked into attacking, through no fault of the victim. You might have stepped onto its property, or perhaps it saw you as a threat to its master. Maybe the dog was just unbalanced. It doesn't necessarily have to be a vicious dog involved in a dog attack.

If an animal is sick or injured, it feels especially vulnerable. And, of course, if the dog is in pain, it might lash out for no apparent reason. This is the cause of many dog bite cases.

Intact male dogs often become aggressive dogs when a female in heat is nearby. It's their old "pack mentality" and part of their instinct. They want to keep away all competition, and when the dog is already in this mental state, a dog bite attack is sometimes a result. A sweet dog can quickly turn into a vicious dog in this case.

How to Avoid a Dog Bite Attack

A dog bite attack can't always be foreseen and avoided, but there are steps you can take to reduce your chances of being a victim of aggressvive dogs. The best advice is to stay away from dogs you might encounter that are not on a leash. If you're out for a walk and see a strange dog running loose, turn and walk the other way. Do this calmly and quietly so as not to draw attention to yourself. Dogs are predators and often chase anything or anyone who runs from them.

it's also best to never approach a strange dog, even if it's with its master and on a secure leash. If you simply must pet the dog, ask the owner first if it's okay, and ask the dog's name. Call its name to get the animal's attention. Once you have it, offer your closed fist to the dog to smell. Don't attempt to pet the dog until it has "met" you and accepted you.

What to do during a dog attack

If you see that a dog attack on you is imminent, try your best to remain calm. Don't look the dog in the eye, and don't make any sudden or threatening movements. Do not run! Unless you're an olympic sprinter, you won't be able to outrun a dog. Don't show your teeth by smiling, and don't turn your back on the dog.

If you experience an all out dog attack, you might have to fight back - especially if the agressive dogs are small or medium in size. Go for the dog's most vulnerable points: the eyes, the throat, and the mouth. If you have something to thrust down the dog's open mouth, do it. If all else fails, use your body weight to wrestle the dog into a prone position. Lie on it if you have to.

If you experience a dog attack from a large or a giant breed, you might not be able to overpower the animal. In dog bite cases such as these, you might need to resort to getting into the fetal position. Cover your face and neck with your arms. If the dog is biting your arm or leg, don't try to pull the appendage away. This will cause more tearing of the skin and will most likely make the dog attack even more. If you're rolled up into a ball, the dog will lost interest pretty quickly. Make sure it's gone before you try to get up.

What to do after a dog attack

Whatever the reason behind the dog attack, the first thing you need to do after a dog bite attack is seek medical help. Even if the dogbite appears minor, complications can occur.

You also need to find the canine culprit and its owners to discover whether or not it is current on its shots. Rabies is a nasty disease and one you’ll need to start treatment for as soon as possible after a dogbite from an infected dog.

Also, make sure the animal responsible for the dog bite attack has been properly leashed or penned. You don't want anyone else to experience a dogbite or a dog attack from the canine.

Dog Bite Lawsuits

If you or a loved one has been the victim of a dog attack or a dogbite, it’s also important that you get adequate legal representation. For dog bite lawsuits, some attorneys and law firms specialize in such dog bite cases. You might be awarded compensation for your medical bills, time lost from work, and any necessary rehabilitation, along with money for pain and suffering. In addition, if the dog owner was negligent, punitive damages are often awarded in such dog bite cases.

Most homeowners have insurance that covers dog attacks on their property. For those who own certain breeds that might be labeled as a vicious dog, like pit bulls, for example, they might have a special liability policy just for their dog's being involved in a dog bite attack. In some areas, this insurance coverage is a requirement for owning breeds that are considered aggressive dogs or have a history of bites and attacks.

Dog attack laws and dog bite laws vary from state to state. Some states allow a dog “one free bite,” while others don’t. Still others have a “grey area” when it comes to dog bite cases. If you know that the dog that attacked you has bitten before, be sure to share the information with your dog attack lawyers. Also, if there were eye witnesses to the attack, tell your dog bite lawyers so that he can speak with them.

Dog attacks can be extremely frightening, but try your best to remember details of the attack. What seemed to set the dog off? Was it wearing a collar? Were other dogs involved in any way? If the dog was a stranger to you, could you positively identify it? Would you consider the animal a vicious dog?

Since the dog bite laws vary by state, it’s probably best to get a dog bite accident lawyer in your state – or in the state where the attack occurred, or either to hire a lawyer who is familiar with your state laws. You might not want to use your regular attorney, even if you have complete trust in him. You want one who knows the ins and outs of dog attack and dog bite laws. You want one with a lot of experience in this type of case. It's definitely best to hire a dog bite accident lawyer.

In the case of a dog attack, don’t even consider going it alone or hiring an attorney you know just because he’s a friend or because you’ve used him before. Hire expert dog bite lawyers. You’ll be glad you did. You can find dog attack lawyers in your area online.

True, even a relatively small dog bite can cause a lot of problems. I love dogs, but I totally believe owners should be responsible if they have a dog that's prone to bite or attack.
