Great Romantic Getaways: Savannah, GA

By habee

Savannah is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States. Steeped in history, mystery, and romance, the town is set among lovely squares, gardens, old homes, and ancient oaks graced with Spanish moss. It’s a city of the arts, superb cuisine, and adventure.

For accommodations, you’ll have a wide range of hotels, condominiums, resorts, and beach houses. Since this article is focused on romance, I suggest one of the wonderful bed-and-breakfast inns. Savannah features many of these, and most are housed in charming old homes.

For entertainment, visit the fascinating shops, restaurants, and bars on River Street. On the weekends, you never know what you might see there!  We’ve enjoyed all kinds of amazing street performances, including some impromptu ones that left us in awe.

Take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage through the city squares. This is especially romantic at night, under a black sky of twinkling stars. The ghost tours are also lots of fun, and some are actually pretty spooky. Spend an afternoon touring historic Bonaventure Cemetery, located on a winding tidal river.

And, of course, there are also Savannah’s great beaches. Stroll the strand, swim, fish, sun, or engage in some bird watching. The choice is all yours!

Below are some of the most romantic accommodations in Savannah – great for Valentine’s Day, an anniversary, a honeymoon, or for just a weekend-long romantic getaway!

Armstrong Bed and Breakfast Inns

This collection of inns is exquisite! You’ll be pampered with wine, fireplaces, breakfast pastries, massages, well stocked kitchens, and gourmet goodies. All the accommodations are in historic townhouses, and all the rooms are beautifully decorated. When it’s time to turn in, you’ll be treated to a feather bed and a goose down duvet. You can even have a private chef!

All the lodgings are conveniently located in the historic downtown section, within walking distance of many attractions and sites. Most overlook Savannah’s lovely squares.  The innkeepers can arrange a special trolley tour, the Paula Deen Tour, a walking tour, or a carriage ride complete with champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries. There’s even an “Elopement Carriage” for those who wish to exchange wedding vows during a carriage ride.

Amethyst Inn

This is a charming house that was built in 1888, and many parts have been lovingly restored. The inn features a dozen cozy fireplaces, parlors, covered porches with rockers, a swimming pool, a garden, and a brick courtyard. The rooms are furnished with beautiful antiques.

A full Southern breakfast is served in the elegant dining room, and cookies and fresh fruit are available throughout the day in the kitchen. The staff is very attentive and friendly, making sure your stay in Savannah is perfect!

Olde Savannah Inn

This place describes itself as “decadent,” and just a peak at their website and you’ll agree.  Old South antiques, historic color schemes, and period architectural details make guests feel as if they’ve traveled back in time. The amenities, however, are all modern: flat screen LCD TVs, Bose CD players, Jacuzzi tubs with special lighting, 800-threadcount Egyptian cotton sheets, down pillows and comforters, oversized towels, monogrammed robes and slippers, foot soakers, hair dryers, and ironing boards and irons.

You’ll begin your day at the inn with a magnificent four-course candlelight gourmet breakfast. After a day of sightseeing and exploring the city, you’ll return to your cozy room and your luxurious bed.

The Olde Savannah Inn offers several package deals, including a Romantic Getaway, a Honeymoon Dream, an Elopement Escape, an English Garden, and a Girls’ Getaway. Among the extras included in the package deals are long-stemmed roses, private carriage rides with champage and strawberries, dinner at The Old Pink House, gift certificates to Paula Deen’s Lady and Sons restaurant, and the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil Tour.

Lighthouse Inn

If you prefer beach lodging, consider the Lighthouse Inn on Savannah’s Tybee Island. You’ll be just steps from the sand in this charming bed and breakfast. Since there are only three guest rooms, you can rest assured that you’ll receive individualized attention!

Peace and quiet and natural beauty are the order of the day here. Each room has a private bath, a TV/DVD player, a mini-fridge, and Wifi. The breakfasts are unbelievable, and complimentary wine and cheeses are offered throughout the day.  Spend your day on the beach, or drive into Savannah proper for some shopping and sightseeing. You’ll want to be back at the inn before dark, however, to catch the glorious sunset from a comfy porch rocker!
