Many of today’s bathrooms and kitchens are absolutely stunning. Once just thought of as functional and necessary rooms, modern homeowners are placing more emphasis on the design and artistic appeal of these parts of the home. They’re more functional than ever, but now they’re also beautiful, with fine furniture-quality cabinets, quarried tile, and extras like unique bathtubs, frameless glass shower doors, and attractive sinks and basins. Some of the most popular sinks on the market now are copper sinks.
Man has been fascinated with copper for ages – at least 11,000 years. In fact, copper was one of the first metals used by man, largely due to its inherent beauty and its malleability. It could easily be shaped into tools, jewelry, cookware, basins, and sinks. Throughout history, copper sinks have been much in demand, especially by the upper class. In more recent times, copper became more affordable, so it was the first choice for sinks in most households, up until World War II. During that time, copper was in high demand by the military, so other materials replaced copper in the construction of kitchen and bathroom sinks.
Copper has made a comeback! Homeowners prefer copper sinks for several reasons. First of all, it’s a natural material that gives a kitchen or bathroom a warm look and feel. It can be hammered and formed into many different shapes, too. It’s also resilient to corrosion and harmful pathogens, including E. coli and staph. Copper sinks actually have the ability to disinfect themselves in a matter of a few hours, so all that’s needed for cleaning is a quick bath of soap and water. Furthermore, copper is a very “green” material; it’s 100% recyclable, without losing any of its intrinsic qualities. Amazingly, experts say that four-fifths of all the copper ever mined is still in use today in one form or another. You can’t get much greener than that!
Copper sinks are available in a number of styles and shapes, including round, oval, square, and rectangular. A very popular model is the copper farmhouse sink, also known as the copper apron sink. Consumers can also choose copper sinks with smooth or hammered textures, along with intricate designs and scrollwork. Finishes available include satin, matte, polished, and brushed. With all these choices, you’re sure to find a copper sink that will be the perfect accent for your kitchen or bath.
Many copper sinks are made by hand, so no two are exactly alike. These handmade copper sinks aren’t mass produced, so each one is unique. Also adding to their beauty is the way the sinks change over time. As the copper ages, it forms a beautiful patina that takes on shades of pale green, sage green, and even turquoise, making the unit look like an antique copper sink. Rest assured, however, if you don’t like this look, you can always restore your sink back to its original color.
If you’re building or remodeling, or if you’re just planning on replacing your existing kitchen, bathroom, or bar sink, think about copper as a replacement. Check out the above link to learn more.
