A guide to small bathtubs

Small bathtubs are becoming increasingly popular with homeowners. Just about everyone enjoys a relaxing soak in a warm bath, but space requirements for a tradition tub often limit choices. A standard bathtub is generally sixty inches long – that’s five feet of valuable floor space! Some bathrooms simply can’t afford spending that much area on a bathtub. Until recently, many homeowners facing this dilemma resigned themselves to the fact that they only had room for a shower stall. Sure, a shower will get you clean, but it’s not the same as immersing your entire body in soothing water. Small bathtubs might be just the answer you've been searching for.

The innovative Japanese solved this problem years ago. They’ve always had a space problem, yet they enjoy a nice bath. So how did they manage a soaking tub with just a small area to work with? They killed two proverbial birds with one stone when they created small bathtubs, and the rest of the civilized world is taking notice and following suit. In the United States, this idea is really catching on and making a splash!

If you think small bathtubs will leave you performing pretzel-like movements, think again. These tubs are smaller than a standard tub, but they’re also deeper. In many ways, the small bathtubs are actually superior to traditional bathtubs. Most have built-in seats, so you don’t have to lie down in order to submerge your entire body. You sit comfortably while the water surrounds you. Also, the raised design allows for easy entering and exiting the tub, making them suitable for the elderly and for those with physical limitations. Another advantage of small bathtubs is that they’re easy to clean because there’s less surface area. Some of these styles are a cinch to install, too! In fact, you might be able to do the job yourself and avoid paying someone else to do it.

You might think that these deeper tubs have to be sunken into the floor, which would create a big mess and added expense, but they don't. The small bathtubs can rest on the floor, just like a traditional bathtub.

The corner bathtub

Small bathtubs are available in several designs. One is a corner tub that makes excellent use of space, especially in a crowded bathroom. Placing the small bathtub in the corner frees up space that can be used for something else. You can even have one custom made to adhere to your bathroom design and personal preferences. Corner bathtubs might be square, triangular, or shaped like a quarter circle. Take a look at the contoured seat in the model below!

The round bathtub

One of the most popular styles of small bathtubs is the circular tub. This chic tub makes the best of a small space and includes a raised seat that provides super comfort. And because of the circular design, this tub has no hard corners, making it incredibly user friendly. Because the tub is round, you can "strecth out" instead of being confined by the narrow sides of a traditional tub.

The classic clawfoot tub

Another type of small bathtubs is the vintage clawfoot tub deign - with a twist. On most of these tubs, one end is raised and slightly reclined to make bathing and soaking extremely enjoyable, and the design is a timeless classic that looks great with almost any decor. This style is also available with soothing jets that give your tired muscles and aching joints a gentle massage.

Small whirlpool tubs

Just because you’re limited on space doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the comfort and health provided by a whirlpool bath, either. Several reputable and well respected companies are now manufacturing small whirlpool tubs that will melt away stress while increasing your circulation. Many models have super comfy built-in seats, too!

Walk-in bathtubs

Walk-in bathtubs are steadily gaining in popularity. You've probably seen these on TV. You literally step into this tub, sit on the built-in seat, close the door, and fill the vessel with water. The door is specially designed to be completely secure and leak proof. This type of bathtub is perfect for anyone with restricted mobility.

If you’re planning to remodel, refurbish, or build a home and are searching for a new bathtub, don’t overlook small bathtubs. They’re available in a wide range of styles, shapes, and colors, including free standing bathtubs, contemporary bathtubs, and bathtubs in vintage designs. You’ll get all the advantages of a full size tub in a smaller package with small bathtubs, along with many extras!

Smaller is fine, as long as it's deeper! I love a tub I can really soak in without having to put my head at an awkward angle and my feet up on the wall... As long as the smaller tub is deep, it makes good sense. :)

Sounds wonderful, habee -- I'd sure give it a try! As I've always been tall I can't imagine having room for my long legs but as you describe the design of these tubs it sounds great! Best, Sis

I agree, SEO! Most of these models are plenty deep enough to sink your whole bod!

Thanks, Sis. I want one, too! I'm getting too decrepit to climb in and out of our tubs.

These small tubs are so quaint! I could just see myself soaking and relaxing after a long day of homeschooling and running behind my girls.

Love the pic - makes me feel like "calgon take me away". Soaking tubs are all the rave too and as long as they are deep, they are luxurious! Great info.

I'm not sure if I'm buying into the smaller tub idea. I've never tried one, but I like to have enough space to lay back and really relax :)

Jen, with these, you sit up, slightly reclined. You're still soaking because these small bathtubs are much deeper than standard tubs.

Hi Habee,

Small bathtubs?? I'm not a fan! You can't 'share' a bath in a small tub!

habee profile image

habee Hub Author 2 years ago

Well, Yen, I dunno...you look pretty small to me! A small bathtub would give new meaning to "togetherness" if you shared it with another. lol!

Great designs of tubs. But i think in terms of functionality and safety walk-in tub will be more functional to be used in bathroom. It is not only for elders but also for everyone. It has more benefits thatn normal bath tub.

Tubs, I hope to get one of the walk-in tubs in my bathroom. Those small bathtubs are super functional!
