North Lake Tahoe vacations

Lake Tahoe is one of the most gorgeous lakes in the world and the largest Alpine lake in North America. Located in the Sierra Nevadas, its blue waters are crystal clear, clean, and pure, with a visibility of over seventy feet. The lake is twenty-two miles long and half as wide, and it’s surrounded by gorgeous mountains and wooded areas.

The lake straddles the border of California and Nevada. South Lake Tahoe and North Lake Tahoe have very different personalities, however. North Lake Tahoe in California is quieter and more natural, with no glitzy casinos like on the Nevada side. Since it’s less developed and less commercial, many visitors prefer its laid-back pace.

Visitors to the North Lake Tahoe area will have a choice of lodging. Accommodations include resorts, hotels, motels, vacation homes, ski lodges, condominiums, ski lodges, chalets, bed-and-breakfasts, and log cabins. Search online for Lake Tahoe golf packages, ski packages, wedding and honeymoon packages, all inclusive packages, and discounts. The best locations for lodging are around the California towns of Kings Beach, Tahoe City, and Truckee. Each of these North Lake Tahoe locales has its own unique personality.

Kings Beach is somewhat like a Florida beach town, believe it or not. The downtown area boasts a public beach that’s sunny all day long. The shops are trendy, the restaurants are fun, and streets are filled with vendors. If this North Lake Tahoe sounds like your kind of place, book a room or rent a cabin.

At the head of the Truckee River is Tahoe City. It’s a great combination of high-brow, outdoorsy, and family fun. It has art galleries, museums, world-class dining, concerts, and lots of interesting history. It’s the perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts, with paved trails for jogging, hiking, skating, and bike riding, along with plenty of water sports in the summer months and camping and fishing opportunities. The famed Squaw Valley is nearby. The town also has a few authentic haunted houses! Kids will love the movies on the beach and playing in the water.

At the gateway to the north shore of Lake Tahoe is Truckee. This old logging town has a tragic past – it’s very near the site of where the Donner Party met their fate. Its present is a totally different story, however. Today Truckee is a very active town filled with opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and snow skiing. Several top ski resorts are located just outside Truckee. Paul McCartney is a frequent visitor! No matter what time of year you visit Truckee, the nights will be cool. Bring along a coat or jacket, even in the summer months – other than Alaska, it has some of the coldest summer weather in the United States, which makes a visit to North Lake Tahoe especially refreshing in the midst of a sweltering summer.

Visitors to North Lake Tahoe will always find plenty to do, no matter the season. In the winter, the area comes alive with all kinds of snow fun, including cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snow tubing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, sledding, sleigh rides, Alpine skiing, and backcountry skiing in beautiful rugged surroundings.

In the summer months, water sports are king at Lake Tahoe. You can spend time on one of the sandy beaches catching some rays, or enjoy the water with swimming, jet skiing, water skiing, parasailing, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, power boating, sailing, and fishing. Another great summer activity is horseback riding through the hills and valleys. Hiking and cycling are popular during the summer, too.

The spring and fall months are the perfect time for golfing at one of Tahoe’s beautiful courses. On the north shore are six championship courses and four executive courses. And there are fourteen more courses within an hour’s drive of Lake Tahoe.

Autumn and spring are also great times to fish the clear waters of Lake Tahoe. Species include brown trout, lake trout, brook trout, cutthroat trout, golden trout, Paiute trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, Kokanee salmon, sunfish, whitefish, catfish, and perch. Rent a boat or hire a local fishing guide to help you find the big ones.

Shopping at North Lake Tahoe is an adventure any time of year. Check out the Tahoe Truckee Factory Stores and The Great Outdoor Clothing Company in Truckee; and Boatworks Shopping Mall, Cobblestone Center, Lighthouse Shopping Center, Resort Rags, Tahoe City Marina Mall, and Trading Post Shopping Center – all in Tahoe City.

Dining options abound. You find everything from casual family restaurants to cafes to coffee shops to four-star dining in North Lake Tahoe. Foods include hearty breakfasts, burgers, steaks, seafood, Mexican, Italian, pizza, Mediterranean, French, deli sandwiches, and Southwestern dishes.

North Lake Tahoe is a wonderful destination for anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and experience the grandeur of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the pristine waters of the lake. It’s the perfect getaway for skiers, families, fishermen, honeymooners, and couples.

I've only been through Truckee once and we only glimpsed at Lake Tahoe but I was so taken by the area. I wanted to stay but there was no way as our destination was San Francisco (from Wisconsin) and it was too close to home for my aunt to stay overnight. I would so love to live in that area and I like a mild climate... but my wife loves a month or so of real heat and that could be a problem I hear. I'm sure we could drive over to Nevada on the days she wanted heat!!! Wonderful hub and the videos were awesome as well.

Thanks, J. If your wife likes HEAT, bring her to South GA!! It's like a sauna in July and August.
