best dog training books

Professional dog training, dog training courses, and dog training books are very much in demand these days, and it’s no wonder. Dog owners want their pets to be well behaved and easy to manage. Some folks see professional dog training on television shows and think, “Hey, that guy (or gal) can do it. How hard can dog training be?” Unfortunately, dog training isn’t always as easy as it looks, partly because many owners approach it in the wrong way. They might read a bunch of dog training books and even take dog training courses, and they might still fail.

Professional dog training

Of course, there’s always the option of professional dog training, but this is expensive. Also, you usually have to transport your furry pal for professional dog training. This can be stressful on your dog and on you. Some dogs just don’t like to travel, and some get anxious when they’re taken away from their home environment. That’s not a good state of mind for a canine to be in when undergoing dog training. Besides, if you're not careful, the dog will look only to the trainer for leadership. You want your dog to see you as the leader.

Dog training courses

Maybe you’ve even considered taking dog training courses so that you’ll be able to train your dog on your own, without paying the high cost of professional dog training. Many of the dog training courses offered around the globe are excellent, but not all of them are equal. As with just about everything, there are the good and the not-so-good dog training courses. You’ll most likely pick up some good dog training tips from such courses, but you might be disappointed in the overall results.

Dog Training Books

So, what’s the answer? As a former dog trainer who has worked with several breeds, I fully believe that every dog is different and every dog will not respond positively to the same dog training methods and strategies. I’ve also learned that you can learn a lot from dog training books. In many ways, I believe the best dog training books are actually better than dog training courses and obedience classes. Why? Because you can go at your own pace, and your dog can learn at its own pace. Also, you can re-read sections of the books as many times as you need to. Another reason I prefer dog training books is that you do the training yourself. This makes the bond between you and your dog powerful, and your pet will learn to look to you for leadership and guidance.

You can find lots of dog training books on the internet, in book stores, and in most pet stores. Of course, like everything else, some are better than others. You might feel a lot more confident reading and following a dog trainer you're somewhat familiar with, like Cesar Millan. Many dog enthusiasts know him from his popular television show, "The Dog Whisperer," and he's written some of the best dog training books on the shelves.

Another expert in dog training, Victoria Stilwell, has also written great dog training books. She also has a show on TV, "It's Me or the Dog." You'll find dog training books by Stilwell and Millan below, along with some other good dog training books.

Excellent hub. Just posted a comment on another hub about my sister who has two dogs; both of which are 1/2 wolf, and 1/2 husky. She did not approach them with the same type of training she did with other dogs. They needed enormous patience. They are wonderful animals; her patience paid off, and they adore her.

I have 3 wonderful, very big dogs that I adore - but nobody has been able to train them. They were all taken from abusive homes and I have to admit I use that as an excuse for their behavior. They are wonderful and gentle with me, but when company comes or even walks by my house I am embarrassed to say the least. I have no need to lock my doors because everyone is terrified to come anywhere near my house. I can't wait to order this course next week - until then I have signed up for the free session. Thanks so much for sharing this - I'm hopeful this may change our lives.

Lol, Garnet. The Great Dane is my baby - one of him as a pup and the other one of him as a big boy.

Genna, I've had several wolf hybrids - German shepherd x timberwolves - and they were all great except for one. I'm not sure any amount of dog training would have helped with her.

@habee. My mother was a breeder. I grew up with 11 Alsations, too many birds, cats, chickens to count. After I left school, she changed direction and started breeding with minatures. She had 200 small dogs of every breed conceivable!

OMG, Sophia - that's a lot of pooches! I've been a breeder before, too, but on a small scale. I've also done a bit of dog training.

@habee, I don't know much about dog training. My late father used to take us on a Sunday to the local German Shepherd Club where he used to train the dogs. I was more interested in boys than dogs... :)

They are my big babies! One is a German Shepherd/Pit Bull mix, the other is a German Shepherd/Golden Lab mix and the third we believe is Lab/Great Dane.
