Songs About Georgia
96
One day I was thinking…there sure are a lot of songs about Georgia. Just off the top of my head I could immediately recall several. I began to wonder why so many songs are either about Georgia or mention Georgia. I decided it’s because it’s such a wonderful place!
Georgia is extremely diverse – both physically and culturally. You name it, we got it! We have mountains, rivers, waterfalls, beaches, islands, huge lakes, thriving cities, little towns, farms, industries, marshes, estuaries, a huge swamp, and acres and acres of forests. We also have Tallulah Gorge, which I believe is the deepest gorge east of the Mississippi.
The state has several interstate highways, including 75, 85, 20, 95, and 16. In addition, we have the best secondary road system in the U.S. At the other end of the spectrum, we still have plenty of remote dirt roads that are perfect for a nice stroll or for horseback riding.
What else we got? Lots of history – Civil War battle fields, antebellum plantations, Native American sites, old lighthouses, and historic cities like Savannah, which was spared by Sherman on his march to the sea.
We also have great colleges like the University of Georgia, Mercer, Emory, Georgia State University, and many others, along with college and professional sports teams.
Georgia has the world’s largest aquarium, theme parks, art galleries, museums, state and regional parks, a national seashore with wild horses, and one of the top U.S. zoos. We Georgians love life and will use any excuse to hold a festival. Take, for instance the Watermelon Festival, the Grits Festival, the Possum Festival, The Gnat Festival, Mule Day, the Swamp Fest, the Big Pig Jig, the Vidalia Onion Festival, the Arts in Black Festival, Wildlife Week, the Peanut Festival, the Pecan Festival, the Sweet Potato Festival, the Cotton Pickin’ Festival, and the Rattlesnake Festival.
Want recreation? We have horseback riding, hunting, fishing, camping, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, great golf courses (including the Master’s), tennis, mountain biking, rock climbing, panning for gold, mining for gemstones, white water rafting, tubing, jet skiing, and water skiing. In the winter, the mountains often provide sledding.
The people of Georgia, for the most part, are warm and wonderful. We believe in Southern hospitality and show it even to our Yankee visitors (lol!). Sure we have a few rednecks, but we also have our share of urban professionals. I’d venture to say that most of us are somewhere in between!
Dang – it’s no wonder there are so many songs about Georgia! Then again, it could be because it’s one of the few states’ names with just two syllables.
Enjoy these great songs about “The Empire State of the South”! And please, if you know any other songs about my state, let me know so I can add it to the list!

Great Hub. Very enjoyable. Thanks.
Habee, My husband was born in Atlanta and we lived in GA for 5 years plus we have children there, so I agree with everything you said. I didn't have a clue there were that many songs about GA. Great hub!
Great hub. Thanks for all the songs.
What a lovely hub! I think you outdid yourself this time, habee. I've only been living in Georgia for the past three years, but I agree with everything you said. A gnat festival? Are you serious?
Nemingha- I love Georgia by Boz Scaggs, but it is not about the state, it's about an underage girl named Georgia and you can figure the rest ;) My suggestion is "Georgia" by Elton John from his Single Man album. One of my favorite EJ songs.
GREAT hub habee! Always love to learn more about "Georgia!" I spent a lot of time there when I was young, but never looked into all this cool stuff! The festivals made me giggle! ha Thanks for putting up all of this great music 2! Best, G

habee.....the last time I was there was in the early 90's....my cousin had her wedding on St. Simons Island....I thought of visiting some cousins there but not sure when? My grandmother asked to be buried there so after she died, she was flown there and my family there did a separate service for her. She lived here in LA for more then 20 years, but she wanted to be next to her husband that passed before I was born there in Georgia......I would love to go and bring some flowers to put on her grave......I will get there one day!!!
On a lighter note, you can't beat some of that cookin!!!!! The best fruit cobbler I ever tasted.....still not over it!!!! ha Best, G
Great work here Habee, loved the tunes too. Was able to spend some time listening to them as it had been a while since I heard these. Really enjoyed them and great job from your neighbor in Florida.
Those are very beautiful song. I like to hear and watch the video. Two thumbs up for you, Habee.
You ain't gonna believe this but "The Devil went down to Georgia!" I can't get enough of that song.. LOL
This is great, a wonderful tribute for our beautiful state, habee. We also have The Big Iron Crank-Up in Bowman every year. I loved everything about your hub. Really outstanding work! Thanks for sharing this with us and keep up the great writing.
Have you heard Zack Brown Band's Highway 20 ride?
Great Hub! Not only is there a lot of songs about Georgia, there are great artists such as REM, B-52's, James Brown, Little Richard, Gladys Knight, Ottis Redding, Black Crowes, Chet Atkins, Travis Tritt, Sugarland, Daryle Singletary, Rhett Atkins, Mark Wills, Luke Bryan, & a huge hit right now, Jason Aldean. There is a lot of Hip-Hop coming from Georgia now such as Ludacris, Usher, OutKast, Jermaine Dupri & others. Guess what Habee? Alabama has still got you beat on the number of songs & artists...LOL! I still love Georgia & would live there..My wife did for 10 years..
I only know a fraction of these songs. I forgot Otis Redding mentioned Georgia in that song, I knew it was about San Francisco, but I had forgotten Georgia being in it. WOW, Georgia is very popular, musically. I'll have to go back and listen to some of those songs. Very interesting habee, I like this one.
Hi Habee! Looking at the Ray Charles, Gladys Knight and Charlies Band, you made me go "Duh!; there ARE a lot of songs about Georgia!" You should do these hubs for every state. There goes 49 more hubs right there! =)
He sings of crossing the GA line.
Habee, Nice informative hub! You are so creative! You have a soulful concert going on here as well! Its been years but you brought back great memories of visiting Georgia... Thank you for sharing, Blessings!
Lotsa good ones here Habee ! I love " Rainy night in Georgia " by Brook Benton. And I have always loved the Allman Bros. And the Atlanta Rhythm Section. I am surprised you did not throw in some B52s ,REM and TLC too. They are all from that neck of the woods too ! And who could not love " Georgia on my mind " by Ray Charles. As I have mentioned in one of my hubs simply one of the most beautiful musical arrangements ever made !

The Love Shack was in Athens, somewhere out Jefferson Highway. The "Atlanta Highway" is the main drag into Athens.

There is a song by JJ Cale and Eric Clapton on the Road to Escondito CD called Head's in Georgia
how about Pablo Cruise - Atlanta June? It's an oldie but a goody!
Conway Twitty's 1978 Number One hit,
"Georgia Keeps Pulling On My Ring"
is one of the greatest Georgia songs of all time......although the Georgia is a lady, not your lovely state - the song is still worth a few thousand listens.
There are actually more than this if you include all the rap/R&B songs. And Georgia Clay by some country artist hah. Thanks for this!
a lovely read!! I would love to visit Georgia!! think my favorite song is On a midnight train to Georgia.
Love from sunny Spain x
Thanks for all the amazing songs you posted. Was a great job! I'm living in Georgia for 11 months and I'll go back to my country, but a part of me will be here... Georgia is the greatest place in US ever!!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this reminder of what a great place Georgia is. All the fun things to do and historical places to see, the topography, the people; and of course the diverse styles of music that you mention of with Georgia in the lyrics or title. Here'a a fairly new song from a Georgian: Catoosa County by fellow Georgian Shawn Mullins. If GA has a town called Rockville you could add R.E.M. I once lived in Atlanta as a boy and spent time in Commerce too. Thanks for this fine article, vids, songs and memories habbee.
Here's a final one for you. Copperline- James Taylor.
That is an insane list, Habee! Our daughter, Georgia, is going to have so much fun listening to all of your songs tonight! We have always sung the Georgia on my Mind song to her, but that's one everyone knows! When we were in Atlanta I brought her home a bunch of Georgia paraphernalia and she loved it. It was one of my favorite HubCamp stops. The people were so incredibly nice! Thanks for the list!

You know habee, until I read this hub, I didn't quite think about just how privileged I am to reside in the state of Georgia. It's true, this georgeous state has a lot to offer both visitors and its locals.
Thanks for reminding me why Georgia is such a beautiful place to live. The songs "Georgia On My Mind" and "Midnight Train To Georgia" are my absolute favorites.
