Writing Online: Hubpages vs. Helium

Make money online

If you’re a writer, perhaps you’d like writing online. You’d probably also like to make money online with your skill. This is entirely possible because of several reputable writing online sites. I’ve explored several of the free writing online sites and have narrowed my choices down to two – Hubpages and Helium. While the two sites are similar in some aspects, they also have their differences.

Hubpages

Hubpages is an online writing site that’s free to join. It’s a good way to make money online. The way you make money online with Hubpages is from Google Adsense. Members can also sign up for Kontera. You can also make money online by adding Amazon capsules to your hubs (articles). For example, if you write a hub about fishing, you can include ads for fishing gear in your Amazon capsule.

How do you make money online with Google Adsense? Once you’re accepted by Adsense, Google will place related ads on your published hubs. When a reader clicks an ad, you get paid. Kontera works the same way. To make money online with Amazon, a product must be purchased while someone is visiting your hub. When that happens, you get a share of the purchase price.

Hubpages gets a share of all your revenue. For 40% of the time, their ads are on your hubs, and for 60% of the time, the Adsense revenue goes to you. Hubpages also gets the share of Amazon sales and Kontera for 40% of the time.

Other capsules you can ad to your hubs include photos, videos, newsfeeds, and links to other hubs and sites. Hubpages gets a lot of “Google love,” so your articles are indexed quickly.

Anytime you want to remove your articles from the Hubpages writing online site, you’re free to do so.

Helium

Another place for writing online and making money on the internet is Helium. With Helium writing online, you choose from among thousands of topics or create a new one. Your articles earn from Adsense, much the same as with Hubpages. While Hubpages reveals how much your share of Adsense will be, Helium does not.

Helium does not allow writers to post photos or videos to articles. Furthermore, on Helium, your articles are rated by your peers. You’re also expected to do a certain amount of rating each month in order to receive your Adsense. This is easy to achieve if you do a little rating every day.

Unlike Hubpages, the Helium writing online site keeps your articles forever. You can never remove them.

Helium also has writing contests. Helium members can win cash by earning the most points in the contests.

In my opinion, the best part of Helium is the Marketplace. This is a great place to make money on the internet. Publishers post titles on Helium Marketplace, and writers are invited to write articles addressing the topics. The publishers provide guidelines and word count for each writing job posted. If your article is selected by the publisher, your account is credited for that amount.

Purchase prices vary. Some sell for as little as $10 each, while others might sell for $120. I’ve actually sold articles on Helium for $200 – for a single article. I would say that most of the writing jobs posted on Helium are in the $40-$50 range.

Another way to make money online with Helium is by selling stock content. This occurs when a publisher sees an article that he wants posted on Helium. He purchases the article for $5, but you keep the rights. You might sell the same article several times.

If you treat writing online like a real writing job, you can do well on Helium. Helium was the first site in which I tried to make money on the internet. I started slowly, with low-paying Marketplace titles. It wasn’t long, however, before I began to make money online in a significant way. There have been numerous months when I earned $1,000 on Helium. I make money mostly from article sales on Helium.

Payout from your writing job

When writing online with Hubpages, you’ll get paid once a month from Google. The threshold is $100. With Amazon, you must earn $10 to achieve payout in the U.S.

When writing online with Helium, the payout threshold is $25.

With both writing online sites, if you don’t make the payout level in a single month, your earnings are rolled over to the next month.

The forums

Both Hubpages and Helium have forums where members can chat, debate, and offer and receive advice. Both writing online sites have guidelines for forum posts. If you break the rules, you get banned from the forums for a while. I’ve never received a ban or warning from either site, so I really don’t know all the ins and outs of not following the agreement terms. I do know that neither site allows personal attacks.

Which writing online site is best for writing online?

It really depends on what you’re looking for in the way of a writing job. Perhaps you’re looking for writing online just for your own enjoyment instead of a writing job. For residual monthly income from writing online, Hubpages is better. They seem to pay substantially more for Adsense clicks.

If, however, you want to make money on the internet quickly, write for Helium Marketplace. If you have writing skills, are disciplined, and treat it like an actual writing job, you’ll make money quickly with Helium.

Warning!

Once you’ve been accepted by Google Adsense and ads appear on your hubs, NEVER click on your own ads! Don’t ask your friends or family to click on them, either. Google is smart, and you’ll lose your Adsense account quickly by participating in such activities.

Make money online

Do you want to make money online? Are you looking for a writing job? If you’d like to join Helium, drop me a line. Just click on my profile and you can contact me via email. I’ll send you an invitation to join Helium.

If you want to make money online with Hubpages, click here.

I enjoy both sites. I also use both to make money online. I like the quick money I earn from Helium and the monthly residual income I earn from Hubpages. If you’re fairly proficient, I suggest you join both writing online sites!

So, Holle - to paraphrase Dorothy Parker, in order to make money writing online: Hubpages, "like candy, is dandy," but Helium, "like liquor is quicker."

Thanks for the meaningful comparison.

I use both also, but I much prefer Hub to Helium. Those contests make no sense to me at all! Marketplace is good, as you said. But the level of creativity allowed (and encouraged) here on HP is what I really like about it.

The things I found bad about writing on Helium is they retain the right to use your articles for life. You can only edit them one time....and if you stop writing there...they will continue to use your articles and not pay you a penny for their use. I read their terms more carefully too late. Once it is published there...they have the right to use it forever without your permission.

Everyone should read all online writing contracts carefully and completely...they can be tricky and it could cost you down the road.

Helium sounds interesting. I really should try it. One thing about HP is that I really obsess with pictures and sometimes wander around way too long in youtube looking for videos that don't exist. I enjoy it, but would love to crank out some articles for money without the fancy trimmings.

Great hub! I also write on Helium, and it took me a long time to really warm up to Hubpages...I'm a five-star writer on Helium so I can make a nice little chunk just in up-fronts without really trying, which makes for a little bit of predictable income along with the more unpredictable daily earnings. In addition, I'm a community editor there, am in two different custom project assignment groups, and help fill in editing and selecting the "short list" of marketplace articles when it starts getting busy there, which also really helps the earnings.

To cvanthul...for the amount that the contests pay, it's not worth it in and of itself. However, with my upfronts I can potentially make an extra $50-$70 in addition to any winnings for the fast cash portion, and they do pick the titles for the contests very well. Out of my top 50 earners this month, I think about 42 of them are articles I wrote for contests, most in the "long-term earners" category with a few seasonal earners thrown in.

So I publish here exclusively. PLEASE tell me if I've got this wrong! :)

Hub Pages allows more freedom of expression than Helium. I don't think Helium has comments do they? It's been months since I was over there.

And I avoid the forums like the plague!

I hit all your buttons but money from writing is like the Eater Bunny. I'll never see it. North Carolina won't help with Amazon. I really dislike Helium keeping "forever" my writings? I'm not sure I'll stay on hubpages but I sure will take my writings when I go.

I'm with FCEtier- I avoid the forums like the plague! I resent my score being affected by the drivel on forums.

Jonathan 21 months ago

Hi habee,

This is Jonathan from Kontera. Thanks for including our In-Text network among your preferred monetization methods through Hubpages. With over 15,000 Publishers and 140 million unique users per month, Kontera is easily the leading In-Text ad network and a great addition to Hubpages.

One of the main reasons Kontera is so effective for so many people is our Synapse Engine, our next generation technology, that rather than just scanning for keyword like other networks do, can actually read your webpages for meaning. This deeper understanding of your content is how we can provide you with the most relevant ads, leading to higher CTR and better CPC.

Another advantage of Kontera is our exclusive ad inventory from such global brand names as Microsoft, Blackberry, HP, L’Oreal, AT&T, Verizon, and Dove. These premium, often Rich-Media ads are the most attractive to site visitors, offer the best possible CPC, and are only available on sites using the Kontera Network.

If you’d like to become part of the Kontera Network, we’re currently offering new publishers a 70% revenue share, which is the best rate in the industry. We’re also offering new publishers a $50 bonus if they get at least 25,000 U.S. page views during their first 30 days on the network. Additionally, we recently lowered our minimum payout threshold from $100 to $50, across all payment methods, so now publishers are seeing their earnings in half the time.

Thanks,

- Jonathan Cohen

Helium Marketplace you only can take work from there when you have so many writing stars. Also that rating system; I have seen article which are as good as each other. So I never rated because it is wrong. No, I prefer Hubapages any time.

Lisa HW profile image

Lisa HW Level 6 Commenter 21 months ago

I've done a lot of "hobby" writing on both sites, so I can vouch for the things you've said here, Habee. They're both good sites, but I think people need to know what they're looking for in order to decide which site may work for them. For me, Helium has taken a direction that isn't really what I want. They're focused on being a "collaborative" and "helping new writers improve". If you're not a new writer, and if you don't want to feel like you're "anti-social" or have an "attitude problem" when you're not interested in someone's "help", Helium may be a little too "new-writer focused" for you (the person considering which site to write for).

Helium was very good to me (in a number of ways) while I was spending a good amount of time there, but it just happened it "morphed" in the wrong direction for me. These days (after 3 years) it's getting awfully hard for me to be able to read "yet one more" Helium article and rate it. I usually skip until I get - believe it or not - poems to rate (while I once made sure I skipped poems so I wouldn't get on the "rates poems list".

I do earn ten times more on here than I do on Helium, but that has to do with what I've written on each site, rather than the sites, themselves.

In any case, nicely done, accurate, and objective Hub.

Habee, you may have read my own Hub on Helium so you know I have serious reservations about the site. I don't like how they keep your articles forever. I don't like the very low rate of passive income - which isn't even truly passive anymore now that you have to rate to keep your stars.

I'm glad to hear you're doing well on the Marketplace, and that others are enjoying the upfronts - but to be fair to newbies, you should explain that they'll have to write a large number of articles for pennies before they can even qualify to participate in those features.

I started with Helium but stopped writing there after finding HubPages. I think I'll go back and check out the marketplace though, I had started to look into it but got addicted to HubPages...lol.

Thanks for sharing about both. Great help for writers!

thank you so much...your hub was very, very helpful. I am a member of both hubpages and helium and was very lost on how to use both of them. I think your hub was very insightful.

I keep meaning to go back and re-activate my account. I've been spread thin, trying to write for 4 different sites and keep a business blog going. I didn't have success in the past with the marketplace the way you have.

Interesting, I never even heard of helium before. It seems like HubPages is better for me anyway but it was certainly an informative comparison. Don't know about Helium but I like the community feel here. Also, I know that the search engines like good hubs!

Thanks for this informative review of Hubpages and Helium. May i ask if you also write on Squidoo. And if yes, where does Squidoo stand as compared to the two sites you reviewed here.

Best!

Habee, what a well written article you have here. Thank you for the heads up about Helium. I have just joined this site today, as it was suggested on wikinut by a writer. I started writing on Wikinut ( Under Denise O)a little over a month ago, I like it but, the money is slow coming in.

I am not doing this to make big time bucks but, it sure would be nice to be paid something more than peanuts.

Once again, thank you for the info.

Great article and thanks. It is really important to read the fine print on the agreement on Helium and decide if it is right for you. If you are working with a publisher check with them as well since most publishers want exclusive rights.

I did some writing on Helium, enjoyed the work and enjoyed rating as well, but for some reason the articles never showed up on search engines like hubs do. I also didn't do enough to get my "badges" and "stars" so couldn't do the marketplace work which seems to be the only way to make money on that site. You, on the other hand, have managed to do all that - way to go girl!!!

Any idea why the Helium articles don't show up on search engines habee?

I have made significant money on Helium, over $400! However, my overall percentage is donw so far now I cannot compete in the Marketplace. That is an extreme downside to the site. It is easier to make some money, but annoying the way your articles can get rated down and it is so hard to get them back up.

Hi Habee,

This hub came up first when I logged in today. No wonder you're making good money -- almost 700 hubs and you've only been here 15 months AND you still find time to be active in the forums!

Great piece of advice.

I was invited to join Helium in 2008 or so (I forget -- didn't do it at the time). But I respect your judgment.

Question: What is your experience with/opinion of DemandStudios?

Thx, MM

habee....sorry, I've not been on HP too much the last several weeks. Anyway, I would put Squidoo and Hubpages on an equal level. I make much more money on Squidoo but I've been there longer and have more content there too. I think they are a great compliment to each other.

I have met plenty of chefs, artists, photographers, crafters, home schoolers, and so forth on Squidoo, but few future novelists. But the community is strong there also.
