Zero Calorie Foods: Apple BBQ Sauce Recipe

By

low carb recipes

Looking for low carb recipes? I’ve come up with something even better – a no-calorie recipe for homemade barbecue sauce. Did you get that? This is one of those rare zero calorie foods. The recipe has no calories per serving. Zero calories, zero fat, and zero carbs. There are five calories provided by the Worcestershire sauce, but that’s for the whole batch of sauce. What’s my secret to low carb recipes for many of the sauces and dressings that I make? The secret is products from Walden Farms. In this recipe, I used their ketchup and their apple butter. By itself, the ketchup is pretty good after you “doctor it up” some. I usually add some garlic, some onion, some Splenda, and a little hot sauce. It’s really not much trouble to do this, and I’m getting a zero calorie ketchup in the bargain. I eat a lot of ketchup!

I’m not as keen on the apple butter – at least, not by itself. I have found, however, that it gives a nice apple flavor to foods, especially to sauces and glazes. And like the Walden Farms ketchup, it does so without providing any calories. The apple butter is more like a jelly than a true fruit butter, so when you use it in a sauce, it’s lumpy unless you run it through the blender or the food processor.

Is this homemade BBQ sauce as good as a commercial sauce like Bull’s Eye or Sweet Baby Ray’s? No, it’s not. But for a zero calorie food, it’s pretty darn good! I use this sauce on chicken, pork chops, and pork ribs. As a matter of fact, I just made some BBQ ribs with this sauce. I even use it as a condiment on burgers and hot dogs, and I like it with grilled beef steak, too.

To be perfectly honest with you, I can’t tell you how this barbecue sauce holds up in the fridge. I’ve actually never had any of it left over after slathering it on meats and poultry.

That's pretty amazing that there is anything worth eating that has zero calories. Usually everything I like to eat is loaded with all the bad stuff! Very interesting!

Wow - zero calorie BBQ sauce! My dad is on a low carb diet, so I'll have to pass this along to him.

Hi, thranax! Nice to see you here!

Leah, like your dad, I use a lot of low carb recipes, too. I'm always experimenting with them and coming up with new ones.

That's a new one, zero carb bbq sauce, you are on a gold mine. Basting some baby back ribs, i bet the sauce actually compliments the rich fatty meat.

i am not sure i believe your claim it has zero calories. only unflavored water has zero calories. it has food in it, low calorie maybe, but zero calorie doubtful. does sound good tho, interesting Hub

habee 8 months ago

You're right, Jenu - it does!

Many thanks, Cardisa!

Alaska, those aren't my claims. They're the "claims" listed on the nutrition labels of the Walden Farms and Ideal Brown products. Check out the labels for yourself on Amazon!

Habee - I love the concept of zero calorie sauce on a nice pork roast...this would cancel each other out...right...ha. however, it does sound great and as I like to make all my sauces from scratch...a good recipe to try.
